|
A clinical study was conducted on the psychiatric symptoms manifested by 40 chronic renal failure patients, on maintenance renal dialysis at Won Kwang medical center. These symptoms were estimated by patients themselves and nurses working at the renal dialysis unit of Won Kwang medical center. The patients¢¥ own symptoms were reported by the self-rating SCL-90-R, and the nurses¢¥ estimation about the patients¢¥ symptoms was performed through HPRS. The data obtained from these scales were compared with those of SCL-90-R which was rated by age & sex matched noimal control group.
The results indicated that the main psychiatric symptoms of patients on chronic dialysis were somatization, depression, phobic anxiety and psychoticism. The psychiatric symptoms were generally more severe in male patients than in females. And it was considered that the main defense mechanism used by patients was denial and this mechanism was also used by the nurses working at renal dialysis unit.
